Which film was the worst of the year 2004, based upon
the most objective criteria available?
-
Here are the 26 movies rated 4 or lower at IMDb this year.
-
Here are the 21 movies rated 25 or lower at Metacritic.
-
Here are the 23 movies which received
positive notices from 10% or fewer of the critics, as per Rotten Tomatoes.
The following six movies meet all three
criteria:
-
Worst of the year:
Superbabies.
- Despite some tough competition, it won in
a landslide. It's rated 1.4 at IMDb - worst of all time, not just 2004! It got 0% positive reviews, obviously also tied for the worst of all time.
It is rated 7 at Metacritic. That was only the second worst of the year,
behind something called National Lampoon's Gold Diggers.
- Second worst of the year.
National Lampoon's Gold
Diggers
- Worst of the year at Metacritic, with a 3,
making it the only movie to "beat" Superbabies in any category. 3.3 at IMDb, 0% positive
reviews.
- Third worst of the year:
Yu-Gi-Oh.
- 2.7 at IMDb, 2% positive reviews, rated 13
at Metacritic.
- Fourth worst of the year:
My Baby's Daddy.
- 3.7 at IMDb, 4% positive reviews, 20 at
Metacritic.
- Fifth worst of the year:
Catwoman.
- 3.4 at IMDb, 9% positive reviews, 23 at
Metacritic.
- Sixth worst of the year:
Taxi.
- Just a hair behind Catwoman, with nearly
identical scores. 3.8 at IMDb, 9% positive reviews, 25 at Metacritic.
The following do not meet all three of the
criteria, but come
close enough to deserve special mention:
-
Daniel - Der Zauberer.
This is a German movie that is now battling Superbabies for the all time
bottom spot at IMDb, and would certainly have made the main list, maybe even
in the #1 or #2 spot, had it received enough reviews to make the other two
lists.
-
Johnson Family Vacation.
Just barely missed the list because of a 28 at Metacritic. Scored 3.5 at IMDb,
and received only 7% positive reviews.
-
Christmas With the
Kranks. 4% positive reviews. It missed the main list because of an IMDb
score of 4.4, which was just above the cutoff.
-
Surviving Christmas.
Affleck-mania! 7% positive reviews. The other contender in the dueling
Christmas fiascos. Also scored 4.4 at IMDb.
-
Merci Docteur Rey. I
don't know what the hell this is, but a 0% score at Rotten Tomatoes always
gets my attention. IMDb says it is a 2002 movie, and scores it a respectable
6.1, but it made the other "bad" lists, and both Metacritic and Rotten
Tomatoes have it listed with a 2004 date. Whatever year it came out,
the bitter
reviews are well worth reading.
-
Godsend. Big budget.
Robert De Niro. It received only 3% positive reviews, and also qualified at
Metacritic with a 22, but scored over the cutoff at IMDb with a 4.6.
-
Twisted. Big budget.
Big cast: Ashley Judd, Samuel L. Jackson, Andy Garcia. Phil Kaufman directing.
Lots of talent, but 2% positive reviews. The scores are almost identical to
Godsend's: it qualified with a 23 at Metacritic, but missed the main list because
of a 4.6 at IMDb.
